Thief - The tabletop game

Reaper makes lots of nice figures that would work as the thief. How is the guard kitted out in this game? Chain with board and sword? Cloth and leather with truncheon?

I did see some cool mini's from Reaper. There was another company that had a couple of cool options but I can't remember the name - I have it bookmarked on the PC at home.

For the guards I found 2 good looking boxed sets - 1 is from Frostgrave and has some cool soldier mini's, I can't remember the brand of the second, but they were medieval soldiers with options to make sword and shield or crossbow.

I think for gameplay I'll just call the guard's armour "Standard Guard Armour" allowing anyone silly enough to play this game the option of fielding whatever model's they have to hand. Weapon wise, will probably go with sword or short sword. I can't imagine house guards would lug shields around though.

I have managed to get a bunch of rules and ideas done up. I'll refine it over the next couple of days and then post them somewhere. I have fought the urge to overcomplicate it (I am the kind of idiot who actually enjoyed WH40K 2nd edition with all the complicated dice rolls and modifiers) and managed to keep it fairly simple.

Further to Mangouste's and Tob's comments about the difficulty of making up a game from scratch, have you looked around at stealth mechanics used in other games?

There are a few board games with stealth mechanics that seem to do something similar to what you are planning:

Ninja: Legend of the Scorpion Clan
This seems to be almost exactly the type of game you are trying to make (if I understand you properly).

Fury of Dracula

Specter Ops

A re-skin or conversion of one of these games with custom terrain and miniature for your chosen theme would be awesome. It would have the advantage that you are adopting rules and mechanics that have been playtested a bunch and proven to give a good game.

All the best with the project. As a fan of Thief, I really hope you can pull it off. Maybe we will even see it licenced one day!
